  • Meaning (2021)

Painted by the artist, J. Bonegard, in 2021, using acrylic on canvas.

    It measures 36" x 36".

Inside every man or every woman, is a core of human existence, a characteristic attribute, non-physical in nature, unyielding, in how it propels the individual — it is called the Soul.

It is the ethereal force around which the physicality of human revolves, constantly pulling on the individual, until he or she reckons with the innermost.

According to the artist, the soul is like the ‘DNA of the Mind’, telling more of a person in ways that no eyes can see, and possessing the intricate details of what lie beneath the skin, in ways that no scientist can discern.

Not that anyone has ever seen or felt a soul, it is more palpable than it is visible, especially to its bearer, the only person that has an inkling of what it is.

Among the extraordinary pursuits of the soul, is the ‘quest for meaning’, as it pertains to the existence of an individual on earth. Beyond the years of innocence, and with increasing maturity, this quest becomes a mission in itself, although not exactly in the way that one pursues a career or an adventure.

For some, this quest is a natural progression, and gradually gains dominance, until it supersedes the individual’s career and other life’s pursuits. For others, life events, both planned and unplanned, become the impetus to embark on this journey.

How it comes into being does not really matter. What matters is the realization that, all humans, at one time or the other, must wrestle with the subject.

The quest for meaning, in itself, is considered a virtuous pursuit, dear in terms of the mental and physical requirements, but worthy of the sacrifice. Not all who embark on such journeys, see it to the end, and the successful completion, is not always a reflection of intellect, aptitude, or strength. Grace is one important requirement, that is often overlooked.

In this artwork, titled, Meaning, the artist, J. Bonegard, was preoccupied with the subject of life, and what it means, to exist, as opposed to what it means, to live.....

  • Ladder (2022)

Painted by the artist, J . Bonegard in 2022, using acrylic on canvas.

    It measures 30" x 48"

This artwork speaks to the ever-present fascination of toddlers with heights and their dog ged determination to find every possible means to ascend whatever peak is in their vicinity.

From falling off table tops, to rolling off unguarded adult beds, and other unpleasant, sometimes traumatic scenarios, children have a way of breaking barriers, exceeding and surprising adults in their adventures.

I guess it’s one other aspect of the superiority of a child over adults, especially in possessing a curiosity, powered by the desire to explore and not readily give up.

That of imagination and language comprehension come first and second.

A closer look at this piece of work tells what a balanced demonstration of intent and spontaneity it is, giving the observer a sense of care-free play, as well as that of serious contemplation.

As with other works in the ongoing ‘Baby Talk’ series, I will continue to explore the use of primary colors in a bed of black and white.

Do not be confused by the sculptural look of the canvas, since the artist chose to capture the image well before the paint became dry.

  • Reflections (2021/22)

Reflections — New Year (2021/2022) by J. Bonegard

Painted by the artist, J . Bonegard in 2021/2022, using oil and acrylic on canvas.

A diptych, each piece measuring 12" by 36".With the birth of a new year, the years gone by take a new meaning.

The sentiment, though personal, is universal to all, bringing back a wave of emotions, of memories, desirable and otherwise, and the occasional nostalgia for an experience that is no more.

To many, the first day of the new year is just another day, simply a roll-over of the struggles of the prior year, and a compounding of the burden of life.

To others, a real awakening is born, a chance to write a new page of life, of purpose and of meaning. It is this gift of awakening that we must all seek, irrespective of the struggles that lie ahead, knowing that within each and every one of us is the will — of meaning, and the ability to overcome, even the impossible.

Of all the wishes that you may desire for the new year, a renewal of self is paramount, with which comes the wisdom to live every hour to the fullest.Beyond the celebration of a new year, let us reflect on those things that matter — faith, family, friends, and neighbors.

We should also remember our planet — earth. All these things we should put ahead of our basic strive for survival, recognition, and for success.May your wishes for the new year manifest as you desire.
